The Weather: The weather has been insane. It snowed steadily through out the first period. At times they had 10 people, not counting ice girls, shoveling the snow off the ice. The Hawks and Pens logos have had to be shoveled off numerous times. When the Plain White T's performed before the game you could not even see the NHL logo on the stage. By all accounts this weather is on par or possibly worse than what the NHL had at the Winter Classic at the University of Michigan.

It has let up now during the first intermission but still snowing. Hopefully the ice crew can stay on top of it better.

The Action: It was a period dominated by the Blackhawks. Chicago out shot the Penguins 14 to 5, Jonathon Toews had 4 shots all by himself. Pittsburgh was able to kill off both of their penalties while the Hawks struggling penalty kill stopped the Pens on their only chance.

The lone score of the period came at 15:35 on a great pass from Toews to the sniper Patrick Sharp who banked it off the far post. Brandon Saad got the secondary assist.

One thing to note is how little Bryan Bickell saw the ice in the first period. He had a team low 1:49 of ice time. Now some of that can be contributed to not being on the power play or penalty kill but no other Hawk played less than 4 minutes. So clearly Bickell remains in Coach Quenneville's doghouse.
